Neurosis se constitue en 1985 à Oakland (Californie). Le groupe a été fondé par Scott Kelly (chant, guitare), Dave Edwardson (basse, seconde voix), deux ex-Violent Coercion, avec Jason Roeder(batterie). Ils sont rejoint plus tard par Steve Von Till (chant, guitare), Noah Landis(orgue, piano, sampling) et par Josh Graham qui s’occupe du visuel durant les lives.
