Savatage est formé par les frères Jon Oliva (chant) et Criss Oliva(guitare), en 1983. Influencés par Judas Priest et Iron Maiden. Stev Wacholz est à la batterie et Keith Collins à la basse.
Leur premier album "Sirens" (1983), est suivi de "Dungeons are calling" (1985), "Power of the night" (1985), "Fight for the rock" (1986) et "Hall of the mountain king" (1987). Avec le nouveau guitariste virtuose Chris Caffery, sort "Gutter ballet", album de heavy mélodique. Criss Oliva est tué dans un accident de voiture en 1993.
